The story was set in a logging community and centered on two brothers and their bitter rivalry in the family. I find this part especially confusing because everything I had ever read about the show said this wasn't actually Leoben because he wouldn't be surprised by her death if it were. Kesey's next novel, Sometimes a Great Notion (1964), appeared two years later and was also made into a film, this time directed by Paul Newman. He also saw the visions she had moments before her death when he, or something using his resemblance, went through flashbacks and allowed her to accept her death. So, how on earth was he surprised and even frightened when they found her body? He saw her Viper explode years before it happened. The last image is of her looking angelic in front of a white background as her Viper explodes. When he has his hand on her throat, he sees a series of visions: first it's the two of them with "their" child in the doll house, then he sees the dream she continually had where they painted over the mandala and then had sex covered in paint, then he sees the actual storm itself, then he sees part of the scene where he (although this is a HUGE question for me because I had always understood it to not actually be Leoben in the visions or whatever you'd call them that Kara had before she died) convinces Kara to realize her destiny and let go of her life, then he sees her, in her helmet, in her Viper, struggling before exploding completely. I finally got around to watching Battlestar Galactica: The Plan and they retcon the interrogation scene from season 1 when Leoben breaks his cuffs and grabs Kara by the throat. >!Battlestar Galactica!
